CENTENNIAL

SINGLE HOP PALE ALE

I know what yer thinking! Centennial? Really? That’s a total Dad hop! What happened to the exotic hops with just numbers for names? If I wanted Centennial hops in a beer I’d go to the liquor store and buy some malty IPA from the Midwest. Well… while you’re not wrong just here us out. Yes Centennial is a classic hop that was first released 35 years ago. Yes it’s the backbone of so many classic “old school” IPAs that laid the groundwork for American Craft Beer. However it’s also one of the most amazing hops out there. It’s higher in so many aromatic compounds than almost all hops on the market. The issue with Centennial is you usually only experience it in these classic hoppy beers that also have a bunch of crystal malt in them. That crystal malt speeds up the oxidative reaction so a lot of what you think Centennial might taste/smell like is actually just old/oxidized IPA and not the hop itself.

Our tried and true Single Hop Pale Ale recipe contains virtually no crystal malt and does an awesome job of really showcasing the amazing properties of this hop. We gets tons of high citrus notes on the nose. It’s a very terpy/floral lemon/yuzu note with what I like to think of as strawberry skin. Not the juicy/candy like aspect of a strawberry but more the seedy outer parts of the strawberry. The flavor follows but this is where the pine comes into play. It’s really fun beer that’s incredibly bright with tons of hop character that never weighs on the palate.

Don’t worry we’ll be back to the latest hops grown in small quantities and only know by numbers soon but look for us to throw in some more classics like Chinook, Cascade, & even Crystal going forward
