Altbier

German Brownish Kinda Amber Ale

Altbier is a style we love and will hopefully continue to brew every year from here on out. The style originates from Düsseldorf in western Germany. There are 6 or so breweries brewing Altbier in Dusseldorf and they’re all quite different. Ranging from sweet and malty to dry and bitter. Most American interpretations tend to fall into the maltier/sweet category whereas our Altbier leans a little on the drier, more bitter side of things. Think, bitterness level and dryness of a pils but with more malt flavor. The malt bill has always been somewhat similar but we now have the ability to decoct.....so we did. An extended single decoction mash, hopped with Tettnang and Mittelfrüh in the boil, fermented with our favorite German Ale yeast and then cold conditioned for 10 weeks! Yup 10 whole weeks. I think this is the best version of this beer we’ve made to date. The extended lagering has really refined the flavors and created an even more nuanced drinking experience. We’re loving it and I hope you do too.
